Cancun: Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach

Justin presented a paper at the 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach, Cancun, Mexico which was from the 9 - 11 December 2008. Sonya, Clara and myself just could not resist the temptation of the sun, the sea and the beach and went with him.

It was 2 hour flight from Boston, Massachusetts to Charlotte, North Carolina where we switched to another 2 hour plus flight to Cancun, Mexico.

It was the first time that Sonya was really interested in looking out of the airplane and she spotted a rainbow. It was really faint and initially I thought it was just from the glass in the window. It was not an arch but circular. Look at the photo above and see if your eyes are as sharp as hers :)

We had a quick lunch at the airport in Charlotte before boarding the next flight. The restaurant had nice decorations of race cars but the food was not very nice :(

We arrived in Cancun in the late afternoon and took a cab from the airport to our hotel. We took one of the registered cabs and it cost us 550 pesos for a 15 minute ride! Along the way, we saw many beautiful resorts and since Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach was supposed to be a 5-star hotel, I had high hopes. We booked a Junior Suite with a king-size bed but they ran out of those and upgraded us to a Master Suite for free :) It turned out to be the biggest and grandest hotel room that we had ever (and maybe will ever) stayed in. Let me give you a tour of the room!

This is the kitchenette area which was in front of the main door. The down side of Cancun was that everything was so expensive and you need to pay for everything! The mini-bar in the fridge came with a key. Everything that was drinkable and edible on the counter and the fridge cost money, even the coffee and water!

Next to the kitchenette was the living room with sofas, a working area and a 27-inch TV that could be swiveled around to face the bed.

2 steps up the stairs is the bedroom.

The biggest surprise was to the right of the bedroom where we found our toilet large enough to fit a double bed!

Besides the shower and toilet, there was a jacuzzi :)

In addition, there was the huge terrace where we got a great view of the pool area and of course, the beach :)

We went out to search for a nice place to have dinner and found this Mexican restaurant where we had real tortilla chips and salsa, nothing like the ones we have had in the States :)

It was already dark when we got back to the hotel.

Sonya and Clara was very tired and had their beauty sleep to prepare themselves for the sun, the sea and the beach the next day...
