Chichen Itza was our only sightseeing place. Justin skipped all the lectures after he presented his paper and we rented a car and drove for about 2 hours to get to Chichen Itza. It was built by the ancient Maya civilization.

It was quite a hot day but not scorching hot. Nevertheless, Sonya and Clara needed a lot of water.

Platform of the Tigers and the Eagles

There are many peddlers scattered all over the area selling handicrafts. They tempt you with the price tag of US$1 to get you interested but the handicrafts cost much more than US$1.

Sacred Well

Temple of the Warriors

The Market

It was already close to 5pm when we were done exploring (and I think there were some places that we did not see) and it was getting dark soon. We got back into our rental car and drove back to Cancun. We did not realize that there were 2 routes, with the same highway number, back to Cancun. One was a toll road where the speed limit was 110km/hour whereas the other was a regular road that ran through many towns. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that "Cancun Libre" meant the regular road and we ended up driving through all the towns and encountering numerous speed bumps. In the end, it took us 4 hours to get back to Cancun and it was too late for Justin to attend the Conference Banquet that he had already paid for.

Oh well, at least we got a glimpse of real Mexican towns and not just the over-commercialized version in Cancun.
