Floor Plan

Photobucket
Sonya was asked to spend some quiet time by herself in the study room while Clara took her nap and I prepared dinner and cleaned up the kitchen. She decided that she was going to draw and totally blew me away with her drawing of our Westgate apartment!

It had the living room, kitchen, babyproof safety gate, bathroom, study room and bedroom. She even put in little details that I absolutely love! For example, you see 3 beds in the bedroom. Sonya and Clara slept in each of their own beds and Justin and I shared another bed. The bathroom has the sink, her stepstool (I think) and the toilet bowl. The living room has the sofa, and lamp and other things that I am not sure what they represent (probably the toy cupboards). The tent (the triangle in the top left-hand corner) has gone into the kitchen but it doesn't bother me :) The position and dimension are not that accurate but for a 4 year old to come up with this by herself, I think it is a very big accomplishment.

This is the kind of children drawings that I love. A true representation of what goes on in their mind and how they see the world around them. They represent each object in what they think is the best angle that describes what it is. As a result, some are from the top view while others are from the front view. It is quite similar to how the ancient Egyptian did theirs :)

She has been rather difficult for the past few days and made me very angry with her. She totally redeemed herself with this drawing :)

  1. SO COOL!!!! I was just reading in a homeschooling book that kids in Kindergarten should be able to draw simple maps of familiar areas, such as their room or home. Way to go Sonya! Perhaps her next feat will be one of the whole Westgate complex, and then MIT, and then Cambridge ... her rest times will get longer and longer. :)

Sorry things have been difficult. It's been rough for most parents with the weather keeping us in and with school being out. But the sun is shining this morning! (Will you come to the bbq tonight?)

  2. I guess she is ready for kindergarten :) I think she miss going to preschool.

Nope we won't be coming to the BBQ tonight. I think we will be having our dinner indoors (less running and chasing) and then go to the Harvard Bridge to see the fireworks later at night.

I am tempted to make one of those american flag themed cake / dessert. We have been here for 4 years and have an American in the family so I guess we should do a little celebration :) Pass you a slice if I do!
